Fuller's Chefs' Guild Apprentice Andy shares his story
Andy has recently joined the Fuller’s Chef Apprenticeship Programme, and works at a premium Fuller’s pub right in the heart of London.
We asked Andy (pictured left) how he is finding his chef apprenticeship with Fuller's.
Q&A with Fuller's Chef Apprentice Andy
Why an Apprenticeship?
"I was looking for an apprenticeship scheme as I’m not a ‘classroom’ type of person! In fact, I’m an aspiring boxer. If I could work and earn, that was the main thing. I actually started out on a traineeship for an apprentice course in accounting, but decided to look for alternative apprenticeships myself. That’s how I came across Fuller’s Chef’s Guild Apprenticeship Scheme."
So, why a Chef Apprenticeship Scheme?
"Cooking has always been a part of my life in some way. When I babysit for my younger siblings I cook for them; in general, they prefer me to cook as I listen to their suggestions! When I was 14-15 years old, I was part of a youth offending team that cooked for the elderly. On weekends I used to volunteer there to build up my CV. As part of the Palace for Life Foundation, I also took part in a cooking course. That, in combination with an employ-ability programme I enrolled on, gave me the confidence to apply to Fuller’s."
How are you finding the Fuller’s Chef Apprentice Scheme? What’s the goal?
"As previously mentioned, what originally drove me was my dream to be a professional boxer and earn some money on my way there. However, since joining the kitchen team at the pub, I have seen myself getting better and better in the kitchen. My Head Chef said that I have a natural ability, so now my aim is to keep cooking! I want to progress to being a Head Chef and beyond!"
What has been one of your favourite moments?
"When a representative from the University where we learn came into my pub’s kitchen, my Head Chef started talking about my talents and told me I could go far. It really touched me, I just want to get across that on the Fuller’s Apprenticeship Scheme, anyone can become a chef no matter your background."
Any final words?
"If Fuller’s can make me a chef, they can make anyone a chef!"
